Today smartstudytrics.com has come up with an important topic under your chemistry, Difference Between Acid and Base. I hope that by reading this post you will be able to understand the difference between Acid and Base very well.
Acid:- According to Arrhenius , the great scientist of chemistry , such substances which give hydrogen ions (H+) after dissolving in water, that substance is called acid . The pH value of an acid is less than 7.
Examples of acids :- CH3COOH, HCL, HNO3 etc.
What is alkali?
Substances which after dissolving in aqueous solution give hydroxide ions (OH-) are called bases. According to Brnsted-Lowry’s law, “bases are substances that absorb proteins from a substance.” According to Lewis’s law of electronic theory, “bases are substances that have the ability to freely impart pairs of electrons.”
Examples of bases:- NaOH, KOH, etc.

How do you identify an acid?
To identify acids and bases, a litmus paper made of lichen is available which is in two colors red and blue. To identify any solution whether it is an acid or a base, then litmus paper is dipped in that solution. When litmus paper turns blue after dipping, it is a rare alkali.
Difference Between Acid and Base
|Acids give hydrogen ions (H+) after dissolving in aqueous solution.
|Alkali on dissolving in aqueous solution give hydroxide ion (OH-)
|The pH value of an acid is less than 7.
|The pH value of alkali is greater than 7.
|Acid has a sour taste.
|The taste of alkali is slightly astringent.
|Acid turns blue litmus paper red.
|The alkali turns red litmus paper blue.
Answers to some questions related to acids and bases
Which is the strongest acid?
The strongest acid superside is fluoroantimonic acid, HSbF6. There is no acid stronger than this.
Which acid is found in ant?
Formic acid is found in ant. It is found in the stings of red ants, bees, scorpions and wasps. When bitten or stung by them, a little acid enters the body, due to which there is swelling and pain at that place.
What is the function of acid in the stomach?
Hydrochloric acid is found in the stomach, which works to kill harmful bacteria inside the stomach.
Which acid is found in tamarind?
Tartaric acid is found in tamarind.
How is amaranth made?
Amaranth is formed by mixing HCl and HNO3 in a 3:1 ratio, also known as aquaregia.
